Interactive peer discussion. Help us identify issues to raise with the NDIA. Friday 19 June. 12pm to 1.30pm. Online via Zoom. SMH logo bottom right. Other images are decorative.

Self-management helps people with disability and our families choose trusted workers, use flexible supports, directly employ staff, and manage supports in a way that works for our lives.

But some people are being told they can no longer self-manage their NDIS funding, sometimes without clear reasons.

We want to hear what is happening and what needs to change.

This Self Manager Hub workshop will be an interactive peer discussion for people who have had self-management refused, restricted, or taken away, or who are worried this could happen to them.

We will talk through your rights and responsibilities as a person who self-manages your supports and explain when the NDIA can take self-management away. We will also explain what you can do when this happens to you.

Importantly, we want to hear from you about your experiences and the problems that you have faced when self-management is taken away. Was it a fair process and did they help you to get self-management back?

What we want to hear about

We want to hear from people about:

    • why the NDIA said self-management was refused, restricted, or removed
    • whether the NDIA gave clear reasons
    • whether you were told what evidence was relied on
    • whether you were offered safeguards or support to keep self-management
    • whether you were told about review rights
    • what impact this has had on your supports, workers, family, or daily life
    • what would help you get self-management back.

What you share will help the Self Manager Hub identify common problems and raise concerns with the NDIA so we can protect self-management into the future.

    What we will also cover

    We will also talk about:

    • your rights and responsibilities when self-managing
    • when the NDIA can refuse or remove self-management
    • what an “unreasonable risk” means
    • why risk should not automatically mean losing self-management
    • what to do if the NDIA says you made a mistake or treat you unfairly
    • what evidence may help
    • what safeguards you can suggest
    • how to ask for self-management back
    • when to request an internal review.

    How the workshop will work

This will be a peer-led conversation, with a brief presentation.

    There will be time for:

    • group discussion
    • questions and answers
    • sharing stories and experiences
    • learning what has worked for others
    • identifying common issues, problems, and solutions
    • discussing what needs to change.

You can share as much or as little as you like.

    Who should attend?

This workshop is for NDIS participants, nominees, family members, and support people.

It is especially useful if your self-management has been refused, restricted, or taken away.

    Important note

This workshop provides general information and peer support. It is not legal advice.

We may use the issues raised in the workshop to advocate to the NDIA, but we will not identify you or share your personal details without your permission.
